When you’re on the road, whether for a trip to another state or to the grocery store, you can never predict when a disaster will occur. In a recent article by the Amherst Bulletin, an unfortunate situation happened for one officer who was on the job.

An Amherst police cruiser was heavily damaged following the chase and arrest of three suspects in a robbery last Tuesday morning at the Northampton Cooperative Bank. Jamie P. Comeau, 36, of Gardner, Jason S. Comeau, 37, and Kimberly J. Choquette, 29, both of Athol, were arrested for unarmed robbery.

All three suspects pleaded innocent at Eastern Hampshire District Court to unarmed robbery. Choquette also pleaded innocent to operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Police said Jamie Comeau entered the bank at 11:50 am and gave a note to the teller demanding money. He fled with money and got into the getaway vehicle, driven by Choquette.

During the pursuit, which police said lasted less than 10 minutes, an unmarked cruiser traveling south and driven by Lt. Ron Young swerved off the road to avoid an oncoming vehicle, crashed into a utility pole, and came to rest against trees at the edge of Belchertown Road, Amherst Police Capt. Chris Pronovost reported.

Two vehicles in the opposite lane had pulled over to allow the Ford 500 cruiser to proceed, but a third vehicle attempted to go around them, forcing Young to drive his cruiser off the road. “The evasive move was used by Lt. Young to avoid a head-on collision,” Pronovost said.

The air bags deployed and Young was wearing a seat belt. The front fender was on the ground next to the cruiser, which was tipped in the trees. “The cruiser was extensively damaged, and probably totaled,” Pronovost said.

Police Chief Scott Livingstone wasn’t sure how fast the unmarked cruiser was going, but that department policy requires officers to be under control and at safe speeds at all times.
