You’ll probably want to take your most valuable items in your car with you, but what if your car is broken into? This becomes even more of a risk if your journey involves staying at hotels or other stops along the way. In this case, your car insurance could also potentially cover items being stolen from your car.

For all of those items movers will be in charge of, talk to the moving company about their insurance. Home insurance unfortunately won’t cover damaged items in the move. That liability could fall on the moving company depending on the situation and , it’s good to be sure before it’s too late they understand their risk and are prepared for it. They also may offer an insurance option for clients they are helping move as an alternative. This is something worth looking into.

Is there any case where broken items would be covered? Typically with fine arts, if you have fine arts insurance there is some coverage for breakage. Speaking of specialty insurance, your scheduled items such as jewelry and fine arts will also be covered in the move for theft or misplacement with your coverage.

If you are between homes and need to put items in storage, you may also want to consider your contents coverage. Just like while you’re on the road, your contents coverage will protect your things if you are at a friends or your things are in storage. If your things will be in storage for an extended period or you have cancelled your home or renters policy it’s best to talk to someone at the storage facility about their insurance options.

Being in between homes without renters or homeowners insurance leaves you without contents coverage so this may be a circumstance to consult your agent on the best thing to do in your situation. It’s important to have the right coverage at all times for your belongings.

Home Insurance Policy Changes

Home insurance varies from state to state, so make sure you notice any differences from your current policy toinsurance for a new home your new policy if it is in a different state. The endorsements and required coverages are some of the major differences. Even with the same company, differences are there and it’s important for you to be aware of all of the old coverages you had to make sure you have the same ones on your new policy.

Talk with an agent and be sure to have your old policy on hand to show them. This is the best way to make them aware of all of your old coverages that you wish to have on your new home insurance policy.

Changing Car Insurance

Moving to a new city or town in your state?  Be sure  to change your car insurance over to a new address. Call car insurance movingan agent to make sure your policy is updated that your vehicle is being garaged in a different area. Depending on the city or town this could affect your car insurance. Territories are set by factoring in auto loss (accidents and thefts) that occurred in that city and a new location can affect your premium. For example, it may be more expensive to have a car in Hartford or Boston than a small, suburban area outside of the city.

If you are moving to a different city, be sure to change your address on your license and register your vehicle in a new state as well as get a new insurance policy. As is the case for your home insurance above, be sure to ask questions and clearly define what coverage you need.
