Brush Fire Safety Tips & Your CT Home Insurance

Spring weather can mean a number of things for those of us in New England.  Usually when we think of April we think of those “April showers”, but given this years’ record temps in March, and the lack of rain who knows what April will bring! The end of March included some dry days and 2012 is shaping up to be a much dryer year than 2011. If you add windy weather into the mix, you are at great risk for brush fires.

With dryer conditions, we all need to be more careful about open flames, which can mean a number of things. If you’re a smoker, be careful about where you toss your cigarette, one spark could cause major issues for an area. If there’s dry conditions it doesn’t take much to light a fire, which is why it is also important to be careful about campfires and burning in your yard.

If you are looking to get rid of dead trees and other leftover winter debris it is important you check to see if you need a permit first. Once you get a permit, think before starting a fire. If the conditions are dry in your area, it may be a good idea to keep the yard a little messy in the name of safety. The same goes for campfires in the yard. While it’s a fun activity for the whole family and the nicer weather makes it a possibility a little earlier, it may be a good idea to wait.
