Essentials for Holding a Large Event at Your Home, Including MA Insurance

It’s only March, but you may already be thinking about the various parties you will be hosting at your home, come nicer weather. Who doesn’t love a good 4th of July BBQ or Memorial Day pool party? On a larger scale, your home may become the venue for someone’s wedding or a family reunion. When it comes to hosting a large event we often times believe that it will save us money, but that’s not always the case.

First on your list of things is probably where on your property the event will be held, and that may leave you needing a tent for your property in case of some bad weather.  Your tent will need to be reserved months in advance, even if you will only use it on an emergency basis. Now you have to consider lighting. And while their heads may be covered, what happens to their feet if weather is bad? You may want to consider flooring for the tent; while it can be costly your guests will thank you when their shoes are still in tip top shape.
Those are just a couple of the hundreds of logistics you will have to worry about if you’re planning on hosting a big event at your home. The whole other side of hosting an event is making sure that you are running it in accordance with the law and your insurance coverage. Most cities and towns will require a permit to set up a tent on your property, a venue sized tent anyway. On top of that, you need to make sure you check to see what sort of lighting you are allowed to have inside of that tent, it may require another permit. Noise will also be an issue if you live close to other homes, inviting your neighbors, or at least warning them about the noise is recommended, especially if your event will have a band or a DJ.

Now that you have the law under control, it’s time to talk to your Encharter Insurance agent about what kind of extra coverage you may need. If you plan on serving alcohol at your event, you definitely need to speak with your agent, as that requires special insurance. Once you realize the scope of you event, make talking about your MA home insurance a priority. You wouldn’t want to invest all of this money  and risk not having the insurance coverage you need to hold it at your home.
