Fall Fire Prevention
As the leaves start to change color, you’re most likely getting excited about your favorite pumpkin flavored treat, apple-picking and Halloween. Fire prevention is probably not the first thing on your mind, but we’re here to remind you! Be sure to think about these seasonal fire safety tips, as well as some that applicable all year round. Once you are prepared with all the tips you need, call your agent and make sure you have the Connecticut home insurance coverage you need if a fire were to take place in your home.
- Smoke Detectors – It’s a good idea to change the batteries in your smoke detectors once or twice a year. To help remember when to do this, every time you change the clocks (each spring and fall), change the batteries!
- Fire Extinguishers – Similarly to the first tip, make sure your extinguishers are in working order.

- Central Heating – Have your heating system cleaned and inspected.
- Space Heaters – Make sure there is nothing within 3 feet of a space heater and never place clothing on them to dry.
- Chimneys and Fire places – Sweep out your chimney each fall before your first fire. Also, be sure to use a screen to keep all debris in the fire place.
- Fall decorations – Use flashlights in Jack-o-lanterns instead of candles. Also, verify that lights and extension cords have been properly tested for such use.
- Family – Teach your children about the “stop, drop, and roll” as well as how to dial 911 in case of fire.
If there is ever an emergency, call 911 immediately. If you have any further questions about ways to prevent fire damage to your home, call an Encharter agent at 888-865-1244. Make sure your homeowner’s policy is up to date so that you will be covered if you ever did have a fire.
