Would you be covered? Take a look at some of the many scenarios that could take place on Halloween and learn
whether or not you may want to think about more coverage.
- Having a Halloween Party
- Hosting a Haunted House
- Distracted Driving
Having a Halloween Party
Everyone knows there is always risk involved when you are a party host. It’s safe to assume the risk increases if there is alcohol being served at your party. The number one thing you need to do as a host at a party where alcohol is being served is be sure your guests have a safe ride home. Never let someone leave your party with alcohol in their system and get into their vehicle. As the host, you could be liable for that car accident and subsequent injuries. This means you would need enough liability coverage on your home insurance, not just those party guests worrying about their own car insurance.
No matter what the party plan is, there is always an opportunity for accidents to occur. If you are hosting a party and there will be games someone could potentially get hurt, adults and children. Food is another area that could cause accidents. Be mindful of any allergies guests may have so that if someone does fall ill to your food or have a reaction, you won’t be at fault. Being a party host may be the perfect time to think about an umbrella insurance policy for extra liability insurance.
If your party will involve vendors like a caterer, band, photographer or anything else, be sure to check with them on their business insurance. Be sure to see proof of insurance just in case so that if anything is broken or lost of theirs or an accident occurs they are at fault for, you know they have the coverage.
Hosting a Haunted House
Does your party include a little bit of spook in the form of a haunted house? Maybe you have set up your garage to be a haunted spectacular for the neighborhood kids to enjoy. Chances are, you will be a huge hit in your community. Halloween really is such a fun holiday, no presents to worry about, just fun times to be had!
Just like you would if you were hosting a party, if you will have guests in your property, you are liable for any accidents that occur and your home or condo insurance coverage will be key. Especially with people jumping out at guests and hidden spooky things, tripping, falling or even something falling on the guests is a huge possibility. When you open your doors, especially to people you don’t know, things can happen and those things can escalate quickly.
What could that mean? If someone were to trip over one of your “coffins” in your haunted house garage, twist their ankle, and then end up needing surgery the bills can add up and it could be you paying them.
Distracted Driving
The above scenarios relate mostly to common scenarios that will occur in your home around the holiday, but there are also issues on the road when it comes to Halloween. Trick-or-treaters and haunted houses can be a huge distraction on the road.
Given that there are already so many more distractions, it becomes even more important to reduce the
distractions like your phone, loud music, and passengers. When you reduce distractions you increase the odds that you are able to stop short if a child darts out in the road. Do you have enough coverage on your car insurance if you are in an accident?
We don’t want to spook you with all of this information, but we do think it is important you’re able to focus on the fun of the holiday and not have to worry. In order to do that, it helps to know you have enough, and the right, insurance coverage in place.
