Holiday Visitor Wrecks My Car; Am I Covered?

Most people this time of the year have a lot of visitors staying with them for the holidays.  What if one of those visitors takes your car to the store for a few things and gets into an accident??  Are you covered?

In most cases, if someone drives your car with your permission, your CT Auto Insurance will cover the accident.  If the accident was very large, involving the possibility of a lawsuit and the limits on your current policy were met and/or exceeded, then the driver’s car insurance would kick in and take over for extra coverage.  BUT: You MUST be careful about whom you let drive your car because if they don’t have adequate insurance or any at all and your limits are met in an accident while they were driving your car, YOU could be liable and could possibly get sued.  Also, the points for the accident follow the driver’s driving license.  But unfortunately, if your car is in an accident, a claim is filed on your policy, which means you could lose your loss-free credit and then your premium could increase in years to follow.  So be careful about who you let drive your car this holiday season!
