Hurricane Earl On Its Way How To Prepare
If you’ve been watching the news, then you are fully aware that hurricane season is upon us. One of the hottest trending topics right now is “hurricane earl” (go ahead, Google it…I’ll wait…You know you want to…).
Well, the next thing you’ll need to know is how to best prepare yourself for a hurricane, and a great resource for that information is the FEMA Hurricane Preparation page on their website. Here are some of their tips:
- Make plans to secure your property. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready
- to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
- Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure.
- Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
- Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
- Determine how and where to secure your boat.
- Consider building a safe room.
If you should experience loss after a hurricane, FEMA is a good resource but then, so is your local Encharter Insurance agent. If you find yourself in need of having to report a claim, your insurance agent can help you. FEMA also recommends photographing “the outside of the premises, showing any damage or flooding. Also, photograph the inside of the premises, showing the damaged property and the height of the water if your property was flooded…If you have separate flood insurance, also call your flood insurance agent to report your claim…Good records speed up settlement of your claim. Compile a room-by-room inventory of damaged good, and include manufacturer’s names, dates and places of purchases, and prices. Try to locate receipts or proofs of purchase, especially for major appliances, and note manufacturers’ names, serial numbers, prices, and dates of purchase.” To see more of their post-loss tips, click here. Also, be sure to do whatever possible to prevent further damage; e.g. tarp on damaged roof and/or other exposed areas. We, at Encharter, also have all carrier claim contact information on our website and our telephone message system.
