Insurance Tips for a Block Party or Backyard Party

Happy summer! One of the best things about the weather finally heating up is that we get to spend more and more time outside. It’s always nice when the time rolls around that we can all get together and spend more time outdoors. If you’re lucky enough to have a great backyard, chances are you play host quite a bit when the weather heats up. This is great news for you and all of your friends, but obviously can lead to issues and accidents on your property. Even for those without the backyard hangout, you may find block parties and other neighborhood fun happening right in your area.

Here’s our insurance tips for a block party or backyard party:

–        Take all necessary precautions to prevent an accident. If there are loose stones in your walkway or maybe insurance for backyard partydebris from a DIY project on your property, make sure you get rid of it before guests are on your property. Quick fixes could be the difference between a trip and fall that causes injuries taking place or not on your property.

–        Be cautious when on other’s property. If you are at the neighbors and you happen to break something, you’re liable. That means your personal liability limits on your home insurance will be what covers the damage, not the neighbors.

–        Be careful about your pets when you have guests over or if there is a block party going on. Especially if you have a dog that can get nervous around a large crowd, make sure he/she has a safe place to be during the party. If he or she bites someone it can turn into lawsuits and a lot of medical payments you will have to pay out. Also, make sure your dog is listed on your home insurance, if he or she isn’t and a bite occurs your home insurance most likely will not help you out with those claims.

–        Make sure you are smart if you serve alcohol. If you are serving alcohol and someone leaves your house and gets hurt, or hurts someone else, you can be held liable. Also, alcohol obviously sets a stage for more accidents all around. Be sure everyone at your home doesn’t overconsume and that everyone has a safe ride home.

–        Know your liability when it comes to the neighborhood block party. Anything that happens on your liability serving food property you could be liable for. This includes injuries to the neighbors. You also will be liable for anything caused by you or household members on neighbors’ property.

–        Cook with caution. Grilling? Keep in mind if you serve food you could end up in a tricky situation. While it varies by claim, you could find yourself liable for someone getting sick off of your cooking.
