Kentucky Derby Weekend & Your MA Car Insurance
The Kentucky Derby is tomorrow! This means big hats, crazy horse names, and all of the other festivities that come with over 100 years of tradition! My favorite part of the Kentucky Derby is reading the unique horse names. Some of my favorites for this year are Daddy Long Legs, Daddy Nose Best, Done Talking, and I’ll Have Another. For those of us up north, not really familiar with the Kentucky Derby hats and horses are sometimes all we think of when we think of the Derby.
For some people, there is much more to the Run for the Roses. Want to impress everyone while watching the Derby? Knowing about just a couple of these Kentucky Derby traditions will probably make you an expert, for New England anyway.
- Garland of Roses: This tradition started when roses were passed out to the women at the derby, and eventually the rose was adopted as the official flower of the race in 1904. In 1925, a sports writer called the Derby the “Run for the Roses” because of the rose garland given to the winner.
- Twin Spires: At the top of Churchill’s grandstand are hexagonal spires that embody their 19th century history. They have become a landmark throughout the world as a symbol of not just Churchill Downs, but of the Kentucky Derby.
- Mint Julep: Did you know the Kentucky Derby has an official cocktail? The Early Times Mint Julep has been the official Mint Julep of the Kentucky Derby for almost 18 years! It is estimated that almost 120,000 are served over the two-day celebrations each year.
- Derby Trophy: Although it is unclear when the first Derby Trophy was presented, in 1924 an official design was commissioned. Since 1975 the trophy has been made by New England Sterling in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The trophy is 22 inches tall, and weighs 56 ounces.
Now that I’ve helped you become the expert of Kentucky Derby traditions, it’s off to the races with your Derby plans!
