News for New Jersey Teen Drivers & Parents
A new safety measure may be in the works for teen drivers in New Jersey. Drivers or guardians of teens may soon be required to complete a driver orientation course before their teens get their driver’s license. The requirement was approved by a legislative committee last Thursday. They also approved a requirement for teens to wait longer before they get their license, forcing teens to have their learner’s permit for a year. Teens must also log 50 hours of practice driving time. The bill was advanced unanimously by the Assembly Transportation and Public Works and will now head to the entire assembly. The state Senate has not voted yet, but the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety says this could decrease road fatalities by 3% statewide.
This is just the latest addition to laws designed to help teens be more prepared for the road, which could be better for everyone in the end. The courses will also help parents be better equipped to teach their teens the rules of the road. Safer driving is good news for everyone on the road, especially if it could mean a 3% decrease in road fatalities. Unfortunately we can’t always avoid accidents on the road, talk with your local agent today to make sure you have the New Jersey auto insurance coverage you need.
