Pothole Damage & CT Car Insurance

We’ve all seen them. We’ve all hit at least one since we started driving. Potholes – they’re the worst! For the most part, we hear a huge clunk (the sound of our vehicle hating us for driving through a hole in the road) and we keep driving to wherever it is we’re off to. But are you aware of the damage potholes can create? You have the possibility of:

  • Blown tires
  • Bent rims
  • Broken suspension components
  • Bent suspension components
  • Broken springs due to impact
  • Blown shocks
  • Bent spindles

Sheesh! Just from one of those “innocent” looking obstacles in the road? When traveling down a well-traveled road, you can expect about 50 potholes per linear mile. That is certainly not ideal. The ones that are only a few inches deep won’t cause you too many grey hairs. It’s the ones that are about 6 inches deep or more and wide enough to accommodate the whole tire. There aren’t many people who just drive through the potholes – or are there? But if you can’t make it around it, at least slow your vehicle down before driving over it. I say this, but caution you against keeping your foot on the break while going over it. (Take notes, I know I’m throwing a lot at you!)

So all this damage you’re at risk for – who pays it? The majority of the time, it is you. The damage typically doesn’t cover your CT Auto Insurance deductible, so it rarely makes sense to file a claim. Damage while on state-maintained roads is again your responsibility. You may have a case when damages occur on a local road, however. Cities and towns are required to maintain their roads, and if they do not, you could seek property damages for up to $5000. Claims must be filed within 30 days of damages. While it is not guaranteed that you receive payment, it is a possibility.

For extreme pothole damage and for other potential damage to your vehicle, you should invest in Connecticut Car Insurance. For one, it is required for drivers to have some sort of coverage, an issue that your CT insurance agent can help you solve. In addition, it’s good to know that should something happen to you, your vehicle, or someone else, you have someone to count on to help you through the situation – and not leave you responsible for all damage. Agents at Encharter Insurance can walk you through basic limits, and talk to you about recommendations specific to your driving habits and your vehicle. Connecticut Auto Insurance is a yearly expense, but it’s a valuable one at that. Plus, you can talk to your Connecticut insurance agent about bundling policies to save!
