Most of us look forward to a little extra time with our co-workers, it’s a great opportunity to form friendships with people you may usually be too busy to talk to. Whether it’s a company dinner, a cocktail party, or something more unique, we are here to help. Put on your most festive holiday outfit and your biggest smile, this year you will survive the holiday party! Here are some great tips to keep in mind as you celebrate the holidays with your co-workers:
- Don’t skip the party! Show your commitment to the company and attend, even if you are not looking forward to it.
- Remember the company’s dress, behavior and harassment policies. Whether you’re still in the office or not, ALWAYS remember you are at a company event and behave accordingly. This goes without say, right?
- Don’t conduct business at the party. The holiday office party is not the time to ask about the new position opening up or to bring up the raise you think you earned. Some business talk may come up, but don’t show up with an agenda, it isn’t the place.
- On the other hand, don’t be too relaxed and find yourself gossiping. The social environment may have people talking about co-workers in a way they wouldn’t normally at work, it’s best to stay out of those conversations.
- Eat before the party. There are a couple reasons for this rule. The first is the obvious: you never know if they will serve food and you don’t want to be hungry. You also don’t want to be engaging in casual cocktails on an empty stomach. Lastly, nobody wants to have conversations with co-workers while also trying to chew.
- Don’t forget it isn’t a Christmas Party. People are celebrating Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Yule as well! Try to limit the specifics when you’re talking about the holidays to respect those around you.
- Limit the amount of alcohol you consume. No one wants to be the talk of the office for all the wrong reasons, but if you do, getting drunk at the office party is a sure-fire way to do it!
- Don’t dance with another employee. This may seem like an odd one, but if you’re slow dancing with a co-worker it could really start rumors and make for an uncomfortable encounter at work the next day! And especially don’t be this guy:
If you’re a business owner, the holiday office party is even more stressful for you. You’re in charge of making sure your employees have a great time celebrating with their co-workers. What’s even more important than making sure your employees have fun? That they’re safe, of course! You keep your employees covered year-round with great Massachusetts business insurance; make sure the office party is no exception. Whether you are having it on-site or off-site, it may be a good idea to talk to your agent and see if you’re covered!
