Thunder & Lightning Storm Preparedness

Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? It seems we are already seeing some rain in September, so what better time to prepare for bad weather? Yesterday we talked about how to prepare for hurricanes and while it’s definitely important to be prepared right in the middle of hurricane season, what about less extreme situations? When you think of thunder and lightning storms you may not think of damage to your home, but it can happen! Many storms can cause a lot of damage, but there are some things that you can do to better prepare yourself in the event that a regular thunderstorm turns into something worse. When you see that “Severe Thunderstorm Warning” appear on your TV, keep these tips for Preparing for a Thunderstorm in mind:
- Build an emergency kit & make a family communications plan.
- Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm to your family or your home.
- Postpone outdoor activities.
- Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
- Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
- Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
- Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning..
- Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
- Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
- Avoid showering or bathing.
