Tips for Winterizing & Insuring Your Boat
As the leaves begin to change, I think it’s safe to say you are heading towards your last cruise on your boat if you live in Connecticut. Even with the nice weather we have been having, it’s time to think about getting prepared for the cold weather ahead, and to start winterizing your boat. By properly storing your boat in the winter, you can save you thousands of dollars in damages created by water that was left in the pipes or engine that then freezes. More importantly, if you don’t take the time to winterize your boat, those damages might not be covered under your boat insurance policy. Spend an hour and make sure you take these few steps in order to protect you and your boat from winter’s harsh weather.
- Make sure all water is drained from the boat.
- Drain all fuel from the engine and then run the engine. Once the system is empty, fill of the tank and add a preservative to keep the fuel from vaporizing.
- Spray the engine, cylinders, and any of the metals that need protection from rust corrosion with WD40.
- Remember to remove the drain plug in case any water does get in, so it can get back out.
- Use a strong and sturdy, waterproof tarp that can withstand the weight of snow and keeps out rodents.
- Make sure to brush off snow after big storms.
- Store boat at slight angle with bow slightly above level to allow for proper drainage.
