Not sure what to get the special lady in your life? Trust me; you are not alone in being a little perplexed at the perfect gift for your girlfriend or wife. Most of the time the perfect gift is something that makes her feel like you put a lot of thought into just what she would like. Maybe it’s her favorite perfume or that handbag she hasn’t stopped talking about for months (those could have been hints just for you). We may not be able to tell you the perfect gift, but I can help you out by letting you know what not to buy for the woman in your life.

Here are just a couple of the worst gift ideas for women:

• Appliances: Here’s a hint fellas: unless she specifically asks for an appliance she does not want to receive one as a gift. It doesn’t say “You’re a great cook”, it says “Cook for me”.
• Clothes: Think your lady is a size large? If you’re wrong and she’s a small it could be a rough holiday. Also, you may think you know what she’ll like, but do you really? If she keeps talking about needing new clothes, promise her a shopping spree (your treat).
• Framed photo of yourself: Think this is a no brainer? It’s more common than you think. If you think a framed photo is the right idea, I’d lean more towards a photo of the two of you together during a memorable moment.
• Non-exchangeable items: What you think is the perfect gift, may not be. Don’t splurge on something you think she will love and then end up not being able to return it.
• Diet or fitness products: You should know without explanation why this is a no-no.
• Gifts for yourself. If you think your girlfriend or wife won’t see right through that flat screen TV “for her” you’re wrong.
• Tacky novelties: LOVE that weird singing mug? It may be keeping you warm on the couch for a couple weeks. Unless there’s a funny, inside joke behind a gift like this, I wouldn’t advise going this route.
• Cosmetics: I’m not sure why any man would attempt to guess what sort of cosmetic brands and colors their girlfriend or wife would wear, but it could end badly. Chances are there’s a pretty strict return policy for cosmetics as well.
• Last year’s gift: So she absolutely LOVED what you got her last year…might as well get her the same thing? Wrong!
• Flowers: It’s always nice to surprise your significant other with flowers, but for the holidays, I’d go with something a little more long lasting. You can get her flowers any day; make the holidays something more special!

My last recommendation is one that most women can agree with: when in doubt, jewelry! It doesn’t have to be the most expensive thing you can find, but the holidays are a special time and jewelry is a special gift.
